More than its rivals, it’s designed to look properly off-roader-y, what with its black lower cladding, faux skid plates and huge grille. Be not deceived: in substance it’s the standard fare for the class, with front-drive only, and Fiesta-type mechanicals. Still, the high ground clearance and all-season tyres should get you up most tracks, and all that bash-plating will ward off urban carelessness. A recent facelift is to thank for the improvement in interior quality, better handling (down to stiffer anti-roll bars and a 10mm suspension drop), and the fact the faux spare-wheel holder that was once stuck to the boot is now a £100 option rather than standard. Good, avoid it.

Driving - Planning on taking a Ford EcoSport test drive? Opt for the 1.0-litre three-cylinder EcoBoost turbo engine. It’s a happy and effective little mechanism, doing its bit quietly. On the inside - If the intended audience is outdoor and family types rather than keen drivers, Ford got many things right. Ford also makes a big play of the connected apps but in reality they’re a bit clunky to use and operate via a state-of-the-Ark mono screen. Most smartphones have voice control anyway now, so why not use that instead? Owning - The EcoSport looks good value. But some options are essential: for instance the only paint colour that isn’t extra is bright yellow.
