2022 BMW M4 Convertible Review, Specs, Price

The convertible version of BMW’s M4 Competition xDrive, to be literal. So the same 503bhp 3.0-litre straight six turbo with the gloriously unintrusive BMW four-wheel drive system that can be switched to rear-wheel drive if you so wish (there’s no uniquely rear-wheel drive version available), the same brawny, big-chested delivery, the same buck-toothed face.

Saying that, the old car’s metal folding hard-top is ditched in favour of a 40 per cent lighter fabric roof, and because fabric folds more easily than metal, the M4’s bum gets a more pleasing profile. And it’s fast fast. It might be 0.2-of-a-second slower to 62mph than the hard top at 3.7 seconds, but you’ve got to have an inbuilt human dynobottom to feel that in the real world, and on a smooth road it’s got grip and feel to spare. Other than that, there are four seats for almost full-size humans, lots of adjustability and a price tag of £83,355 without options. So not exactly buttons.

It’s probably best left to your own sense of style to work out whether you like the M4’s deep nostrils/squirrelly face furniture. Suffice to say that it’s extremely colour sensitive - darker colours suit it better, contrast doing it no favours. It’s certainly mellowing with exposure, but you are left wondering what might have been. It’s certainly got some decent angles to it - especially when you can see the M4’s bonnet vents punching through on the top surface of the grilles.

More excitingly, the convertible gets a much more shapely rear deck thanks to the fabric rather than metal roof, and more luggage space than before at 300-litres, with a bit more when the roof is up. There’s a really pleasing profile roof up or down, and it doesn’t seem to lose much for having material up top, because it’s quiet enough, warm enough and generally excellent. Oh, and the roof will open or close at speeds up to 31mph in 18 seconds in a pleasingly mechanical ballet.

Fearsomely fast, good-looking roof up or down - apart from the rear headrests which are a bit lumpen - with a top-drawer all-wheel drive system, the M4 Comp Convertible is pretty much all you need for rapid open-air motoring. But anything past 7/10ths on a rough bit of road, you feel the loss of the roof particularly keenly, and with the 3.0-litre turbo straight six really going for it, that’s not ideal. Even though you can play with the settings to mitigate some of the inconsistencies, it leaves you wondering if one of the less-aggressively-engined 4 Series xDrive convertibles would be just as good for swanning around, for less cash. Because of that, keen drivers would be best to head for the xDrive coupe if they want the BMW badge.

But there’s something to be said about hearing that six-cylinder engine on song without the roof getting in the way that really appeals. And it’s still cheaper than an AMG C-Class (which itself isn’t the latest version of the C-Class even at £88,700), and you’ll be looking at a Porsche 911 Convertible with smaller back seats and a lot less oomph for just under 100k. Lots to like, in that case. Just beware some of the possible colour combinations - the configurator is not necessarily your friend.

That engine still has all the same aural and physical cues of the coupe - it sounds excitingly straight-six-ish with the exhaust on full loud and stretched further up the rev-range, and it still has 479lb ft of torque which makes quick overtakes safe and precise. It’s a real point-and-squirt car, with the excellent 8-speed automatic doing a lot of the heavy lifting when it comes to usability; fast and sure when going quickly, happy to dawdle and cruise though traffic with equal ease. Knock all the systems back into comfort running and the M4 Cab reins right in, to the point where you wonder whether it’s the same car. Good stuff.

Probably worth noting here that if you use the power, the efficiency will drop like a stone. TG managed 35+mpg being relatively gentle, but that dropped to 15mpg going fast. Saying that, the car is capable of such rapid performance that there has to be a tradeoff somewhere - 0-62mph in 3.7 is absolutely achievable and startlingly fussless, and if you option the ‘M Driver’s Package’ then you get a 180mph top speed. That’s a wig worrier if ever there was one.

As with all of these things, decapitation requires strengthening elsewhere, so the M4 Comp Cab gets rigid-mounted rear subframes, some underbody RSJs and other support. It’s not a light car, weighing in at a shade over 1,900kg, making it around 150kg heavier than the fixed-roof. That’s not an insignificant amount of extra weight. And it doesn’t - quite - make the difference up, either. On a really bobbly bit of British B-road, the M4 Cab can shake pretty hard, both through the scuttle and the steering column. Yes, you can mitigate that by playing with the various suspension settings, but you can never delete it, and you never forget that this is a convertible. Knock back the aggression and be calm and it’s obviously less noticeable, but coupe drivers would be aghast. TG simply put on the standard airscarf hot air blowers and went a bit slower until the roads smoothed out.

Grip is reliable, relatable and exploitable. The xDrive system feels even more useful than ever before, and even in the more dynamic modes feels more rear-wheel drive than anything else - to the point where TG isn’t sure where a full rear-wheel drive mode would be useful outside a drifting demo or donut competition. The steering remains slightly compromised even on smallish bumps, and can get weirdly light in some modes, but generally this is a car that can cover ground startlingly quickly and with a lovely noise piped directly into your ears. On the right road, it’s genuinely lovely.

You can mess with the steering weight, throttle response, brake weight, exhaust, dampers… and fine-tune even within the broader pre-sets. The hardest settings unsurprisingly accentuate the car’s dynamic weak spots unless you’re on a glass-smooth surface, but after a bit of fiddling there were excellent compromises to be had. We keep going back to the xDrive system, but it really does allow the car to feel playful and engaging without being antisocial - find the damper setting that works best for your favourite road, always have the exhaust at maximum noise, and you’re looking at a really fun convertible to punt around.

the dash is exactly the same as the M4, so all very nicely put together and stylish, with a responsive and intuitive multimedia/nav arrangement that you can control via the iDrive rotary wheel. The roof button is down on the centre console and it’s an easy rocker switch for open and close, and everything really does feel nicely put together, in the finest BMW tradition. You get the same options as the M4, too, which means you can plump for VERY racy carbon front seats (more on that in a minute), although one thing does disappoint if you do: once the roof has dropped, the front seats have thin, incorporated head restraints, but the back seats have thick headrest pillows. And they look weird in profile. A small thing, but…

As mentioned, the boot is big enough at 300-litres (with a bit more if the roof is up and you don’t need to put it down), and there’s a load-through for longer items. The two seats in the rear are acceptable, though they do tend to get a bit blustery compared to the nicely bubbled front seats, which work well even at speed, and there’s an airscarf system that blows warm air around if you want to do the winter-convertible thing. It’s not an estate car, but it does the four-seat convertible aspects very well. It’s actually pretty rounded. Mind you, it should: BMW has been doing this for a while now.
