This year, the 2023 Ram 2500 will make headlines for its new Heavy Duty Rebel package and its available diesel engine. However, the entire lineup continues to evolve with the addition of new technologies and features. The class-leading High Output Cummins is still only available on 3500-grade trucks, but Ram's handsome designs and wide range of trims for every conceivable use case span from Spartan work trucks to dedicated toy haulers, topped by the off-road-equipped Power Wagon and luxurious Limited package.
2023 Ram 2500 HD Review, Specs, Price
Sometimes a standard full-size pickup truck is insufficient. When you need to tow and haul more than a standard F-150 competitor, you must consider the heavy-duty segment, and if you ask us, the Ram 2500 is the best in the business. Following a minor update in 2022, a few new technological options and next-generation towing mirrors are added to the lineup in 2023.The Ram 2500 is a heavy-duty pickup truck that competes with the Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD, Ford F-250, and GMC Sierra 2500HD.
Even a few years after it was introduced for the 2020 model year and won our Truck of the Year award, the Ram 2500 remains the best available heavy-duty pickup truck. The standard gas V-8 is always in its powerband thanks to a clever, smooth-shifting eight-speed automatic, and the available diesel's seemingly bottomless reserve of torque had us comparing it to a Bentley.
Ram has also created a heavy-duty pickup that is aesthetically pleasing and nearly elegant. The interior of the 2500 is also superior to that of its competitors, with premium materials, a clever and functional design, and a segment-leading level of advanced technology. Whether or not you're towing a 15,000-pound boat, the large Ram's superior ride quality and interior comfort make it an ideal companion for long road trips. In addition, the off-road-oriented Power Wagon will be a better option for some drivers than the supercharged Ram TRX.
The 2500 truck from Ram is available with either a gasoline or diesel engine. The standard gasoline engine is a 6.4-liter naturally aspirated V-8 that generates 410 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque. RWD is standard, while 4WD is optional, and the V-8 gas engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. For maximum payload capacity, choose the gas engine, regular cab, RWD, and 8-foot bed. This configuration is capable of carrying 3,910 pounds of payload.

The diesel option is a 6.7-liter turbodiesel inline-six. This engine generates 370 horsepower and 850 lb-ft of torque, a vastly superior figure. It is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and RWD or 4WD, and diesel is your best option for towing large loads. How big? RWD diesels are capable of towing up to 19,990 pounds.
The 2023 Ram 2500 Heavy Duty Rebel is positioned between the Laramie and Power Wagon in the lineup and is the brand's second Rebel-badged model after the 2016 debut of the 1500 Rebel. It is offered as a crew cab with a 6-foot-4-inch bed and with both powertrains. It can tow 16,870 pounds and carry 3,140 pounds and comes standard with a 12,000-pound winch, but only when equipped with the 6.4-liter engine.
For 2023, Ram did not alter the 2500's drivetrain, so the standard 6.4-liter gasoline V8 continues to produce 410 horsepower and 429 pound-feet of torque through an eight-speed automatic transmission. Optional all-wheel drive (AWD) with an electronic transfer case The 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel inline-six engine retains its 370 horsepower and 850 lb-ft of torque ratings from 2022 and is paired with a more robust six-speed automatic transmission. Again, the high-output diesel with 1,075 lb-ft of torque is only available on the Ram 3500 with a ton of towing capacity.
Selecting the Cummins adds just under $10,000 to the sticker price of every 2500 model, but this is less than the cost of adding a diesel V8 to a Ford or GM competitor. The Chevy Duramax is available with a displacement of 6.6 liters and 910 lb-ft of torque, while the Ford F-250 is the only 2500-class pickup to offer a high-output diesel, the 6.7-liter Power Stroke with a segment-leading 1,050 lb-ft of torque.
For the new model year, the Ram 2500 diesel adds 10 pounds of towing capacity to match the Ford F-250's rating of 20,000 pounds. However, lower-grade Rams tow less, including the off-road-focused Power Wagon, which is only available with a gasoline V8 and a 10,520-pound tow rating. Regardless of output, Heavy Duty Rams ride more smoothly than the competition due to the segment-exclusive coil-sprung rear axle and available air suspension system.
The Rebel shares the Power Wagon's off-road components, including its shocks, springs, factory lift, and front axle. Like the Power Wagon, it has only four-wheel drive. However, the Rebel lacks the front locker (rear only) and the electronic sway-bar disconnect. It does have an available rear air suspension and larger wheels than the Power Wagon (20s and optional 18s as opposed to 17s), and both have 33-inch tires. Fuel tank and transfer case protection skid plates are also standard on the Rebel.
Special badges and a Mopar Sport performance hood distinguish the Rebel from the rest of the HD lineup. If you opt for the Cummins engine, these badges are also available. Exterior options include a spray-in bedliner, LED bed lighting, and a bed step. Cargo tiedowns are standard. The interior is available with cloth, Bristol leather, or Natura Plus leather upholstery, as well as a 12.0-inch frameless digital instrument cluster and a 12.0-inch vertical touchscreen display. A 360-degree view camera system, a digital rearview mirror with towing mode, and a host of other available safety features, including adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, a lane-keeping system, and blind-spot monitoring, are available as additional options.
Above the Big Horn trim level, a tablet-style, 12-inch touchscreen infotainment system is standard. Displays on entry-level Tradesman trucks measure 5 inches. Six speakers are standard, but higher trims include a 10-speaker system, and audiophiles can opt for a 17-speaker configuration. Other available technologies include a 360-degree camera system, a digital instrument cluster with a 12.3-inch display that is new for 2023, and 360-degree towing cameras.
For 2023, Ram has added a few towing features. Next-generation tow mirrors feature telescoping functionality and are available on all models. The infotainment system also features a new Trailer Tow Pages app with multiple view modes, including behind-the-trailer and blind-spot trailer options. A trailer reverse steering control system permits the driver to enter measurements in order to track the trailer's position and steer it.
The Ram 2500 lineup's price increases reflect industry-wide trends, with the base 2500 Regular Cab's price increasing by almost 10% to $43,920 in 2023. (excluding destination). The least expensive Crew Cab begins at $47,5400, while the first Mega Cab costs $57,015. Adding interior tech options or choosing specific packages can quickly increase the price of the HD Rebel, which starts at $67,045 (plus $1,800 for destination) and rises to over $90,000 when equipped with the Cummins engine and Level 2 Equipment Group. The Ram 2500 is not inexpensive, but it has a lot to offer.
