The Volkswagen Atlas is a spacious and cozy three-row SUV. A user-friendly infotainment system and useful driver assistance are other selling points. The lackluster acceleration of both of the Atlas' available engines is a negative, but this SUV is an attractive option for families. The 2023 Volkswagen Atlas is a three-row SUV with seating for seven passengers and is the largest vehicle VW currently sells in the United States. Since its 2018 launch, the Atlas has been one of the best midsize three-row SUVs, and even the third row offers remarkable passenger comfort. Volkswagen simplifies the Atlas' trim levels and makes a small update to the vehicle's features in 2023. The Atlas SE is the starting point for the new five-piece lineup, as the Atlas S is no longer available. The Atlas is available with either a 235-hp four-cylinder or a 276-hp V-6 engine. Both are equipped with either front- or all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission. The V-6 engine sounds and feels sophisticated, conveying no vibrations into the cabin. Even though the latest four-cylinder and V-6 vehicles we tested had average acceleration, they rarely seemed underpowered on the road. Although it's not as entertaining to drive as the Mazda CX-9, the Atlas is responsive to driving inputs and never seems clunky. It is calm on the highway and maneuverable in the city. The ride is smooth and absorbs all but the most severe potholes.

Volkswagen installs a factory-installed trailer hitch on all Atlas V-6 models. The maximum towing capability of the six-cylinder variants is 5000 pounds, the same as the Toyota 4Runner and Subaru Ascent. Four-cylinder Atlas models have a reduced pulling capacity of 2,000 pounds.

The Atlas' fuel economy numbers are not exceptional for this class of large family haulers, but its real-world performance is comparable to those of the segment's fuel sippers. The four-cylinder variant is the most fuel-efficient, with city ratings of 21 mpg and highway ratings of 25 mpg for the front-wheel-drive version. The thirstier V-6 variant achieves 18 city/24 highway mpg with front-wheel drive and 16 city/22 highway mpg with all-wheel drive. During thorough testing on a 75-mph real-world road, the V-6 Atlas returned 24 mpg, while the four-cylinder vehicle returned 27 mpg. Even among its very practical competitors, the Atlas is a practical choice because of its family-friendly interior spaciousness, uncomplicated control arrangement, and plethora of cupholders. Additionally, a third row of seats that can accommodate adults of average size is a nice plus. The inside design of the Atlas is straightforward and functional, making it ideal for families but less so for fashionistas. The cottage should be able to fit anything a suburban family can throw at it, and there are numerous well-placed storage spaces for minor stuff. The Atlas wowed us with its ability to fit four carry-on bags behind the third row and 38 behind the first.

Regardless of trim level, the Atlas is well-connected and eager to entertain. The touchscreen interface is as straightforward and responsive as that of a typical smartphone. The SE comes standard with a 6.5-inch touchscreen that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a six-speaker audio system, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and two USB connections. Starting on SE models equipped with the Technology package, the size of the touchscreen increases to 8.0 inches, the rear seats share three USB ports, SiriusXM 360L satellite radio (subscription required) is included, and a wireless phone charging pad is included.

Safety and Driver Support The Atlas is equipped with a variety of basic and optional driver-assistance technologies.
