It is typically tough to get enthused about an electric hatchback family hauler that isn't a performance model, such as the impending Ioniq 5 N, or isn't badged with a prominent brand. The Ioniq 5 will receive many improvements in 2023, albeit they will be rather minimal given the model's 2022 introduction. The all-wheel-drive (AWD) Ioniq 5 now has an estimated range of 266 miles, up from 256 miles in the '22 model. This increases its MPGe rating to 113 in the city, 90 on the highway, and 101 overall, an increase of three miles equivalent in each case. A battery heating system is now standard equipment for the entire line.

A battery preconditioning function is also standard and activated when the navigation system is programmed with an EV fast charger location. The RWD standard-range Ioniq 5 is equipped with a 125kW motor driving the rear wheels, producing 168 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, and delivering a maximum range of 220 miles. The extended-range RWD variant has a class-leading range of 303 miles and 225 horsepower. The AWD Ioniq 5 with two electric motors (74 kW and 165 kW) provides a total output of 320 horsepower and a truck-like 446 pound-feet of torque for those who desire all-wheel grip and a great deal more enthusiasm.

The range of the AWD model is 266 miles. Despite the fact that the extended-range RWD model achieves the best fuel economy of the three, the AWD model is unquestionably the best option for enthusiasts who also value practicality. The Skoda Enyaq and Volkswagen ID.4 are both larger overall in the trunk space than the Hyundai Ioniq 5, but it still offers a respectable 527 liters of cargo space. The doors include graphite-effect trim inlays, and the indicator and washer stalks have metallic covers that feel cool and silky to the touch.

The shortcut buttons that run along the bottom of the infotainment screen are made of plastic that feels a little on the cheap side, but this is cleverly compensated for by other cool elements. All variants of the Ioniq 5 are equipped with a pair of 12.3-inch digital displays situated atop the dashboard, which is unsurprising given Hyundai's emphasis on technology. The first is in place of an old-fashioned instrument cluster and contains all of your driving data, while the second is the infotainment system's touchscreen and focus point.

It is easy to use, with a number of shortcut buttons along the bottom border that allow you to navigate from one function to another without using the menus.
