The eighth-generation Hyundai Sonata Hybrid maintains its position in the United States' midsize hybrid sedan class, where it competes with the Honda Accord Hybrid and Toyota Camry Hybrid. The Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, like most of its competitors, delivers nothing in the way of excitement, but it is a fine alternative if you're seeking for an eco-friendly midsize sedan with a cushy ride. The gas-electric Hyundai Sonata Hybrid is offered in Blue, SEL, and Limited trim levels, putting its specifications on par with the conventional ICE vehicle except the N Line and SEL Plus trim levels. It is a very new product, having been introduced only three years ago, and is based on the brand's popular N3 platform. The brand-new eleventh-generation Accord is now available, with a focus on hybrid variants and a cutting-edge new hybrid powertrain with dual electric motors.
For 2023, Hyundai has replaced the Limited's solar glass roof with a panoramic sunroof and upgraded the SEL trim's 8-inch central infotainment touchscreen to the Limited's 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation and voice recognition.
Not only is the SEL Plus model the most cheap option to acquire the 180-hp turbo-four engine, but it is also the only Sonata with 19-inch wheels and improved all-season tires. In addition, it has a 12.3-inch completely digital instrument cluster, leatherette and microsuede upholstery, air vents for the rear seats, a USB port, and wireless charging. We would also add the Tech package to our selected Sonata. It features a 12-speaker Bose audio system, a 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a panoramic sunroof, and a semi-autonomous driving mode.
2023 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Review, Specs, Price
A normally aspirated 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 150 horsepower and 139 lb-ft of torque powers the 2023 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid sedan's front wheels via a six-speed automated transmission. This is coupled to a 51-hp/151-lb-ft electric motor, and the overall output of 192 hp is more than plenty and will get you around without straining. In all fairness, this family car is not intended for driving aficionados, therefore our evaluation of the 2023 Sonata revealed that it offered a somewhat monotonous driving experience. It emphasises comfort with a suspension that is softly sprung, but the steering's crisp and direct feel and the brakes' sensitivity are at odds with the soft suspension. It's composed through bends despite the comfort bias, but the Sonata's abrupt reflexes, especially in Eco mode, as well as its sharp steering and brakes, prevent it from settling down. The 2.0-liter HEV drivetrain does not always make a seamless transition between its two power sources, and its automatic transmission is not particularly snappy.
The eight-speed automatic transmission shifts are seamless and well timed. In addition, we would like to praise Hyundai for continuing to provide a standard automatic transmission in its family car. The majority of vehicles in this category now feature droning, but efficient, continuously variable automatic gearboxes (CVTs). During our time with the Sonata hybrid, which combines a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a 192-horsepower motor-generator, we admired its fuel-saving efforts but loathed its jerky transition between gas and electric power. The 290-horsepower N Line is one of the quickest front-wheel-drive vehicles we've evaluated, and it offers a pleasing level of driving spirit. The N Line reached 60 mph in 5.0 seconds, which is only a tenth of a second slower than the Honda Civic Type R.
The Sonata is available with a variety of fuel-efficient powertrains, with the hybrid models providing the best estimations. Other hybrid Sonatas are anticipated to get 45 and 51 mpg, respectively. The hybrid we evaluated on our 75-mph fuel-economy route, which was part of our thorough testing protocol, achieved its highway rating of 51 miles per gallon. Sonata versions with the turbocharged 1.6-liter (36 mpg) and the turbocharged 2.5-liter were also evaluated (33 mpg). Visit the EPA website for additional information about the Sonata's fuel economy.
The interior of the Sonata is lovely and feels more expensive than its sticker price suggests. The rear seat is comfy and roomy, the materials have an expensive appearance and feel, and the dashboard design is straightforward and ergonomic. The Sonata's 16 cubic feet of cargo space is typical for midsize sedans; it is neither the greatest nor the worst in its class. Still, seven of our carry-on baggage fit in its trunk, which is ample space for a lengthy family road trip.
The infotainment system has a central touchscreen measuring 8.0 inches. In SEL models with the Convenience Package, SEL Plus vehicles, and Limited variants, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster is also included. Hyundai's new technological crowning achievement is the Digital Key feature, which enables owners to unlock their car via near-field communication (NFC) and control various vehicle functions remotely using the Hyundai app and their smartphone. This would allow drivers to abandon the key fob if their active lifestyles made it inconvenient to carry one.
The Hyundai Sonata Hybrid does many things well, but it is hardly a class leader. The standard equipment on all three trim levels is extensive, especially in terms of safety features. It's interior and trunk room make it a good option for compact families doing extended road journeys. Given that it is a hybrid, the design is considerably more striking, allowing it to overcome the stereotype that HEVs are dull automobiles. The driving experience, however, does not cash the checks that the design writes. The previous-generation Honda Accord Hybrid is more enjoyable to drive without sacrificing interior size or comfort, and the brand-new 11th-generation Accord should be even better. The Sonata Hybrid needs to hone its blade a bit more before it can claim a podium spot, but this seems improbable given that it is towards the end of its lifetime and may not even be replaced as automakers abandon the midsize sedan market in favor of crossovers. The Accord remains the best hybrid sedan in this segment of the market.
