2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe Review
The Mercedes-Benz GLC coupe adds a dramatic twist to the GLC-class SUV, which we evaluate separately. A lower roofline gives the coupe a more aggressive appearance, at the expense of some rear-seat headroom and total storage space. The Audi Q5 Sportback, BMW X4, and Infiniti QX55 are similarly sophisticated competitors. The GLC300 coupe is only available with all-wheel drive and is powered by a 255-hp turbocharged four-cylinder mated to a nine-speed automated transmission. The GLC coupe includes a variety of premium inside materials and safety features, as well as an extensive selection of optional extras. While the GLC300 is not a performance powerhouse, its agile handling and comfortable ride speak more than its performance.
BMW's X6 and X4 were responsible for taking a tall, hefty, and roomy SUV and lowering its interior capacity with a swoopier roofline. This niche was so popular and profitable that Mercedes had to follow suit, first with the GLE Coupe and then with the smaller GLC Coupe, which competes with the BMW X4 and provides Benz a style-driven competitor to the Range Rover Evoque and whatever Audi comes up with next week. For the facelift announced in early 2019, few exterior changes were made, indicating that the coupe-ification of the GLC did not offend Mercedes purchasers. There are primarily modified LED light graphics, but no new bodywork creases, which is OK with us. It is less irritating to our optic nerve than a BMW X4.
All models have new engines with the exception of the AMGs, which will be covered in a separate review. This is for the rational variants. If there is such a thing as a reasonable four-door coupe sports utility wagon, then every version of the Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe comes standard with four-wheel drive, an automatic transmission, and AMG Line trim, which includes a body kit and a grille with a lot of chrome.
Inside, the infotainment system has been upgraded, and around 73 percent more of the cabin is now touch-sensitive. Touchpads on the steering wheel, a touchpad on the center console, and a touch-sensitive display make this vehicle ideal for anyone with dexterity. The entry-level GLC 220d AMG Line Coupe is priced at £44,045, while the more powerful GLC 300d in AMG Ultimate trim costs £57,675. It is little about £3,000 more expensive than the GLC SUV, model for model.
The first is an idea borrowed from legendary supercars such as the Lamborghini Diablo and the Ferrari Enzo: poor rear visibility. The back window is long but shallow, and the rear bodywork's beltline is high enough to accommodate a teenager. Mercedes is eager to remind out that the GLC Coupe comes equipped with self-parking, a parking camera, and parking sensors; it can even locate a parking spot for you using the navigation system.

The visibility and image quality of the 360-degree cameras are unparalleled. Pin-sharp. Very well done. That's all well and good, but cameras on a highway at night or in the rain are useless. Sensors may be deceived. There are instances when it is really advantageous to be able to look out of your car. The second phase of the GLC Coupe's schport makeover entails tightening the suspension to the point where the car is noticeably less comfortable and more jarring than the normal GLC, then stiffening it further and adding 19- or 20-inch wheels as a finishing touch. As a result, it is excessively firm for little handling benefit. Oh, the quick and substantially assisted steering gives the car an artificially agile impression, and it guides the vehicle precisely.
Actually, the rear is not as cramped as you may have imagined. It's possible to fit a six-foot-tall adult behind a driver of the same stature, despite the gloomy, claustrophobic atmosphere created by the conventional tinted glass and tiny back window. They will have to slouch a bit, and their quiffs may be slightly flattened, but there is plenty headroom and sufficient legroom for comfort. You won’t want to ride in the middle rear seat for long since it’s raised a little higher, but at least Mercedes installed five seats as standard instead of maintaining this is a "coupe" and plumping for four seats exclusively.
For the facelift, more technology is the order of the day. Take, for example, the new 5,5-inch screen that is standard in the instrument cluster. Impress your buddies with its complex submenus and digital dials! Impress your loved ones with the steering wheel's touch-sensitive pads! So much for day one. Even with familiarity, there’s no denying the glitzier instruments are fiddlier to navigate than the old version was. Similar considerations apply to the 10.25-inch infotainment display. Oh, the screen quality is razor-sharp and the loading times between functions are minimal. By replacing the tactile clickwheel with a touchpad and then a touch-sensitive display, navigating through menus now requires multiple taps and swipes, whereas it previously required only a clickety-click of the ratcheted selector.
Perhaps it appeals to smartphone users in a showroom. On the road, though, it is a step backward in terms of usability. The "Hey Mercedes" voice assistant can expedite some of the more complex aspects of running the system by accepting spoken commands. Remember that it is constantly listening.
The GLC300 coupe is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that generates 255 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. The standard 4Matic all-wheel-drive technology transmits power to all four wheels via a nine-speed automatic transmission. We've previously driven a GLC300 coupe and have more recent experience with the SUV body shape, but we've never put the sloped-back model on the racetrack. Still, based on our observations, we can conclude that the coupe's suspension settings are strong enough to offer a spark of driver excitement, yet smooth enough to assure a bump-free daily commute. There are also five different drive modes, allowing the driver to adjust the coupe's handling to fit their mood or the road circumstances.
The GLC300 coupe is projected to achieve 20 city mpg and 26 highway mpg. However, these figures are marginally inferior to those of the four-cylinder BMW X4, which is rated at 21 city mpg and 28 highway mpg. We haven't gotten a chance to test the Mercedes on our 75-mph highway fuel-economy route, which simulates its real-world mpg and is part of our rigorous testing process. The Mercedes is equipped with an abundance of basic and optional driver-assistance technologies that are designed to prevent collisions and make driving easier.
