The 2023 Polestar 2 — particularly the single-motor form — continues to set the benchmark for a dependable, durable EV with a premium appearance. The Volvo spinoff company's EV has a sporty body that is still ambiguously located between a large hatchback sedan and a tiny crossover, but it maintains a sleek and luxurious appeal. In spite of a cramped rear seat, there is ample baggage space, and it can manage all types of driving thanks to its 270-mile range and performance-ready variations. The built-in Google entertainment system is user-friendly and straightforward, with Google Maps providing excellent navigation. It is a reliable EV for both converts and skeptics.
In 2023, Polestar will introduce new models, including the "New BST Edition 270," with limited availability for the high-performance option. Due to a software upgrade, the dual-motor now has 68 horsepower and 15 pound-feet of torque. The software upgrade extends the dual-motor vehicle's range by 11 kilometers (now 260 miles). Two exterior paint options are available for an extra $1,250: Space (metallic black) and Jupiter (gold gray with red flake). The base 19-inch and optional 20-inch wheels have fresh designs. The new Nappa leather upholstery color Zinc Gray is offered with a new Light Ash décor trim. A retractable sunshade for the glass panoramic roof. The optimal temperature range for the mechanical heat pump (included in the Plus Pack) is now between 20°F and 77°F. The cabin filter and interior particulate matter sensor have been modified to work with the new in-car app. After years of delays, Apple CarPlay is now compatible with iPhones for wireless communication.
The 2023 Polestar 2 can function as a family vehicle or a sportier vehicle. It is Polestar's second vehicle (thus the name) and its first all-electric alternative with Android Automotive OS natively integrated into the vehicle, bringing Google applications. It is a more spacious and less opulent alternative to the now-defunct Polestar 1 hybrid sports car, but it will lag behind the larger, crossover-style Polestar 3 when it is released.
2023 Polestar 2 Review, Specs, Price
After its 2021 debut, the second Polestar has settled on two configurations: single- or dual-motor on a 78 kWh battery, with a range of up to 270 miles. Both can be enhanced (at a cost) with additional performance, range, design, and comfort options. For the 2023 model year, a 270 performance variant with BST trim was introduced.
The Polestar is closely matched (mainly in price) to the Tesla Model 3, providing a more economical, long-range electric vehicle choice that isn't overly luxurious but doesn't sacrifice on safety and technology amenities. It cannot compete with the Model 3's 315-mile dual-motor range, but it is comparable to other small crossover EVs such as the Kia EV6, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and Volvo C40 Recharge. It is less SUV-like than the Ford Mustang Mach-E, Volkswagen ID.4, and Volvo XC40 Recharge, with which it shares a platform. The practicality of the Polestar hatchback falls between that of a sedan and an SUV, hence its competitive combination.
The Polestar 2's $48,400 single-motor and $51,900 dual-motor variants have respective ranges of 270 and 260 miles. With the all-wheel drive (AWD) dual motor configuration, there are 408 horsepower and 487 pound-feet of torque, and it accelerates from zero to sixty miles per hour in 4.5 seconds, which is sufficient to keep up with a V8 Ford Mustang GT but not quite on par with its electric Mach-E GT counterpart. A software upgrade adds 68 horsepower and 15 lb-ft of torque to the dual and reduces acceleration time. The single-motor version has 231 horsepower and 243 lb-ft of torque, and it takes 7 seconds to reach 60 miles per hour from a standstill, which is still quite speedy by traditional sedan standards.
The Polestar 2 is a little vehicle, measuring 181.3 inches in length, with a tight back seat that makes the front seat more comfortable. However, its hatchback form, a combination of sedan elegance and SUV utility, is large enough to accommodate two foam surfboards. Its Swedish origins are reflected in its exquisite interior, which features clean lines and comfy materials, while remaining athletic and approachable.
In contrast to the dual-motor, all-wheel-drive variations of the Polestar 2, versions with a single 228-hp motor have front-wheel drive. In our tests, this variation reached 60 miles per hour in an ordinary 6.8 seconds. The more potent dual-motor, all-wheel-drive system, which incorporates an electric motor on both axles and delivers a total system output of 402 horsepower, accelerated from zero to sixty miles per hour in 4.1 seconds. The model with the most power is the Polestar 2 Performance, which has electric motors with a maximum output of 469 horsepower. In addition to 20-inch summer tires, firmer suspension components, adjustable Hlins dampers, and enhanced Brembo front brakes, the Performance variant features 20-inch summer tires. During our testing, this combination reached 60 mph in 3.9 seconds, provided up to 0.90 g of cornering grip, and required 160 feet to stop from 70 mph. Additionally, Polestar offers three degrees of regenerative braking, the strongest of which may bring the vehicle to a complete stop without the driver tapping the brake. While the aforementioned upgrade is designed for enthusiasts, we believe that the 2 rides more comfortably with the stock suspension. The BST Edition 270 is the quickest Polestar 2 model. We had the opportunity to test drive one in the Bay Area of California and were delighted by its increased power and more responsive handling. Unfortunately, it has sold out.
Like the Volvo XC40 crossover, the 2 rides on the Swedish automaker's Compact Modular Architecture (CMA), but the electrified version of the platform houses a 75 kWh lithium-ion battery pack under the floor. The electrical system enables up to 150 kilowatts of quick charging, and Polestar claims this technology can recharge a dead battery to 80 percent in forty minutes. On a single charge, the single-motor variant has an estimated range of 270 miles, while the dual-motor model has an estimated range of 260 miles.
The single-motor 2023 Polestar 2 is rated at 107 MPGe combined and has an estimated range of 270 miles. The dual-motor variant is predicted to have a range of 260 miles and a combined 89 MPGe. On our actual highway trip at 75 mph, our sample traveled 190 miles on a full charge, which is comparable to the Audi e-tron premium SUV but less than the Tesla Model 3 long-range sedan, which managed 230 miles. Visit the EPA's website for additional information on the Polestar 2's efficiency and range.
The 2's interior combines wood, fabric, and plastic in a style that is both basic and artistic. It appears contemporary with its clean lines, muted color scheme, and minimum switchgear. The 2 draws a few design elements from its Volvo relatives, such as the steering-wheel buttons and knurled start knob, but the overall appearance is less cluttered. Polestar adorns the inside with eco-friendly vegan materials to complement the electric engine (though you can get leather if you really want it). The power-operated liftgate provides access to a cargo area with 14 cubic feet of space. Want more? The trunk provides an additional cubic foot of storage space.
The driver is presented with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a central, iPad-like, portrait-orientation touchscreen. The latter measures 11.2-inches and performs the majority of operations while running Google's Android Automotive OS. It differs little from other contemporary interfaces: Imagine a box divided into four squares, each of which is dedicated to a distinct category of apps, such as navigation, phone, or music. By grouping comparable programs in one area of the display, Polestar believes users will have an easier time locating what they need, hence reducing distraction. It makes Google Maps the integrated navigation system and delivers essential EV-specific information to the driver, such as the locations of local charging stations and how long you'll have to wait once you arrive. Two USB ports are located in the front and two in the rear, satellite radio is standard, and Harman/Kardon provides the sound system.
Safety and Driver Assistance The Polestar 2 is equipped with a variety of driver-assistance and safety systems that are intended to provide increased peace of mind. Visit the websites of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) for more information about the Polestar 2's crash-test results. Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection is a vital safety feature. Standard adaptive cruise control Standard blind-spot surveillance
warranty and servicing Polestar's limited warranty adheres to the industry standard and is comparable to Tesla's. Additionally, the company offers competitive coverage for the electrical components of the 2. Surprisingly, Polestar does not provide the same complimentary three-year maintenance program as its parent business, Volvo. The warranty is valid for four years or 50,000 miles. The warranty period for electrical components is eight years or 100,000 miles. There is no complimentary planned maintenance.
