Rivian was not the first business to build an electric pickup truck, but the innovative design and remarkable performance of the 2023 R1T earned it a spot on our list of the 10 Best Trucks and SUVs for 2023. The R1T, which is somewhat larger than a Ford Ranger, is driven by two or four electric motors, depending on the model, with the most powerful version producing 835 horsepower and allowing 11,000 pounds of towing capacity. It is easier to maneuver in confined spaces due to its smaller size compared to full-size vehicles such as the Ford F-150 Lightning and the GMC Hummer EV SUT. The Rivian's cabin is furnished with premium materials and advanced technology, including a 16.0-inch infotainment system and a digital gauge display. The truck's standard adjustable air suspension, available all-terrain tires, and optionally carbon fiber underbody protection made off-road driving a pleasure. There is a cost for all this brilliance, though, and regardless of configuration, the R1T is a costly rig—but so are its competitors.

EV motor, performance, and power All-wheel drive is standard on the 2023 R1T, however it is available in dual-motor and quad-motor models. 600 horsepower are generated by the Dual-Motor model's two motors. This model accelerated from zero to sixty miles per hour in just 3.3 seconds on our test track, making it the fastest pickup truck we've tested to far. The R1quad-motor T's configuration enables what Rivian terms a "Tank Turn," in which the left wheels revolve in the opposite direction of the right wheels, causing the vehicle to spin on its axis. Our initial test drive in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado demonstrated the R1remarkable T's off-road capabilities as well as its brisk on-road performance.

Pulling and carrying capacity Each R1T, according to Rivian, can pull 11,000 pounds, and the truck has a payload capability of 1,760 pounds.
