The lifted, aggressively styled 2022 Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 makes it clear that this is no ordinary half-ton pickup vehicle. While not as extreme as the high-flying Ford F-150 Raptor or the 700-hp Ram 1500 TRX, the ZR2 is Chevrolet's most formidable full-size pickup. In addition to its intimidating appearance, it has a 420-hp V-8 engine, 33-inch tires, and a modified suspension. The latter consists of Multimatic spool-valve absorbers derived from Formula 1 and Baja race vehicles. Its interior features a digital dashboard, and its crew-cab body style ensures that everyone can appreciate the ride when the pavement ends. The 2022 Silverado ZR2 provides the bow-tie brand with a genuine off-roader, though it may not impress Ford and Ram enthusiasts.
What is novel in 2022? This is the first Silverado to wear the ZR2 badge, which previously appeared on smaller Chevy pickups and SUVs with an off-road orientation. Pricing and Purchasing Decisions: Silverado ZR2: $69,295 The base price of the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 is just under $70,000, which is almost $10,000 more than the most luxurious non-ZR2 Silverado, the High Country. The ultimate off-road pickup from Chevrolet is priced similarly to the F-150 Raptor ($70,370), but significantly less than the Ram TRX's initial price of nearly $80,000.
Powertrain, Engine, and Performance Under the massive hood of the ZR2 is the same naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V-8 found in the standard Silverado 1500. A 10-speed automatic transmission is paired with the engine, which produces 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. Every ZR2 has a four-wheel-drive system with a two-speed transfer case and electronic front and rear differential locking. Specially-tuned suspension with high-performance spool-valve dampers stabilizes the truck's 18-inch rims, which are outfitted with aggressive 33-inch off-road tires. The truck's undercarriage is protected by a unique skid-plate package, and according to Chevrolet, the ZR2's high-mounted steel bumper offers a 31.8-degree approach angle, which is greater than what's available on similarly elevated Silverado Trail Boss models. Now that we've driven the Zr2 in Joshua Tree State Park, we have a greater appreciation for its capabilities as well as its narrower width compared to the F-150 Raptor and Ram TRX, which makes it simpler to maneuver on narrow trails.
Towing and payload capacity: The Silverado ZR2 can tow up to 8,900 pounds with a conventional trailer attachment. The half-ton tractor can carry up to 1,440 pounds of cargo.
Economy of fuel and real-world MPG: With its 420-hp V-8, the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 is rated at 14 mpg in the city and 17 mpg on the interstate, for a combined rating of 15 mpg. Although these estimates are superior to the Ram TRX and its 702-hp supercharged V-8, which achieves 12 mpg combined, they are unimpressive. The F-150 Raptor and its 450-hp twin-turbo V-6 are estimated to achieve between 15 and 16 mpg combined, with the lower estimate applicable to models with the optional 37-inch tires. Once we are able to operate the ZR2 on our 75-mph highway fuel economy route, we will be able to assess its real-world mpg. Visit the EPA's website for more information about the Silverado ZR2's fuel economy.
The ZR2's primary attraction is a set of four brilliantly tuned Multimatic spool-valve dampers, as it lacks a 700+ horsepower V-8. Compared to conventional shocks' stacked discs, spool valves provide engineers with greater control over damping characteristics and more consistent performance over the life of the vehicle. Depending on the tire position, fluid is pushed through one of three valve bodies in each ZR2 damper. As the suspensions approach the limits of their 9.6-inch front and 10.6-inch rear travel, the dampers rely on valves that have been calibrated for large impacts and jumps.
This suspension travel pales in comparison to the Raptor's maximum front and rear travel of 14.0 and 15.0 inches, respectively. However, unless you habitually plan flights into the automotive stratosphere, you are unlikely to miss the additional cushioning. At the Bundy Hill off-road park in Michigan, which is alternately sandy, rocky, wide open, wooded, dry, mud-covered, fast, and sluggish, I never required more cushion than the Silverado could provide. The ZR2 made large whoops, deep ruts, and boulders that I never saw coming vanish without so much as a wince.

The ZR2 from Chevrolet adopts a purist approach to off-roading. Utilizing locking front and rear differentials and a transfer case with 2 High, Auto, 4 High, and 4 Low modes, traction is achieved. The 33-inch BF Goodrich Wrangler Territory MT tires, which are the largest permitted by the Silverado body, do not need to claw for traction. They grab the earth and propel the Silverado forward without any additional effort. Notably, there is no disconnectable anti-roll bar, programmable damper settings, or active exhaust. There are only two additional driving modes, Off-Road and Terrain, in addition to the default Tour mode. Their names are unhelpful. Off-Road is designed for high-speed maneuvers, whereas Terrain is optimized for sluggish rock-crawling. Nonetheless, this is not a complaint. It is invigorating to drive a modern performance vehicle in 2022 without being distracted by a plethora of settings that have a negligible effect on the driving experience.
Surprising even more than the ZR2's off-road capability is its sophistication on the road. On pavement, these spool-valve dampers provide superior body control compared to the components found in Silverados designed for the road. A firm ride eliminates body roll without being startling or rough. For a three-ton vehicle that is capable of momentary flight, the ZR2's handling in corners and over rough pavement is surprisingly refined. This is likely attributable in part to the structural rigidity that you can perceive. Or perhaps it is more accurate to say that you do not perceive the same structural flaws as in other vehicles. The F-150 twitches and flexes more than the Silverado, but this is frequently concealed by the Raptor's cushioned suspension.
The Silverado's diverse skill set is as much a testament to Chevrolet's engineers as the Multimatic damper system. Extreme off-roading, towing, hauling, and daily commuting—all with a single calibration—is a rare and extraordinary accomplishment. The ZR2 team possessed the confidence and expertise to accomplish this feat.
Cargo, Comfort, and Interior: The interior of the Silverado ZR2 features a sleek dashboard with a 12.3-inch completely digital instrument cluster and a 13.4-inch touchscreen. The interior features leather-upholstered seats and dark, sporting accents. Between the front reclining seats is a center console with an electronic T-shifter. However, we found the shape of the transmission lever to be awkward, and we even activated the Park button with a resting hand. The ZR2 is only available as a crew-cab, so passenger space is abundant, particularly in the back compartment. Those who intend to transport more items in the cargo box should choose the lengthier standard-length bed over the shorter short bed.
The Silverado's interior no longer undercuts the ZR2's substantial price tag. Large digital displays measuring 12.3 inches in front of the driver and 13.3 inches in the center stack dominate the more modern and upscale design introduced by Chevy's midcycle refresh of 2022. Standard compatibility with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay includes a head-up display, a rearview camera mirror, adaptive cruise control, and a power tilt and telescoping steering wheel. But what we appreciate most are the large, user-friendly physical controls for the climate system and secondary controls. In addition to the crisp and distinct screen graphics, the Silverado's controls are intuitive from the moment you step inside. Too few manufacturers prioritize this nowadays.
The $445 optional Multi-Flex tailgate, on the other hand, is not particularly appealing. This Rube Goldberg-esque tailgate transforms into a step, a work surface, a bench, and a load stop for lengthier cargo. However, it is cumbersome to operate and appears to be more of a burden than an assist. In addition, simple steps molded into the corners of the rear bumper make climbing into the ZR2's elevated bed straightforward.
Infotainment and Connectivity: A 13.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system with a horizontal orientation is standard on the Silverado ZR2. In addition to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the system is interoperable with Amazon Alexa and has Google voice assistance, maps, and an app store built in.
Safety and Driver Support Every Silverado comes standard with a suite of driver-assistance technologies, and there are a variety of optional aids that make driving and towing easier. Visit the websites of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) for more information about the Silverado's crash-test results. Standard forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking are vital safety features. Standard lane departure warning and lane maintaining assist Adaptive cruise control is available.
Warranty and Maintenance Coverage: Chevrolet covers the half-ton Silverado with a competitive warranty that falls short of the Nissan Titan's extensive powertrain coverage. Nevertheless, each Silverado 1500 comes with one complimentary maintenance visit. The duration of the limited warranty is three years or 36,000 kilometers. The warranty on the powertrain is valid for five years or 60,000 kilometers. Free maintenance is provided on the initial visit.
